BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Samford football team opened spring practice for 2010 with a two-hour workout in shorts and helmets Tuesday afternoon at Seibert Stadium.
Samford head coach Pat Sullivan said he liked the way his team started its first spring practice.
“I thought we had a really good first day of spring practice,” Sullivan said. “The attitude was good and the effort was good.”
Sullivan pointed out a couple of bright spots he saw during Tuesday’s practice.
“I thought a couple of our young receivers had good days,” Sullivan said. “Chris Cephus made some nice catches, and Chinedu Amah made a couple of nice catches, which was good to see. The defense flew around some today. It was a good learning day for us.”
Sullivan said he and his team had been looking forward to the start of spring practice. He said he and the Samford coaching staff would use the spring for several purposes, including filling the holes left by the graduating seniors from last year’s team.
“As always, we lost a lot of good players who were seniors last year,” Sullivan said. “We lost, on offense, Jon Weber who has been our starting center the last three years, and Jonathan Lowery, who is the third all-time leading receiver at Samford. We will miss both of those guys. Wes Alexander, who has played a lot of football as our H-Back or fullback, was a senior last year and he will be missed as well.
“Defensively, we lost Ty Levie, who was a staple for us in the secondary as well as on special teams,” Sullivan said. “Two linebackers, Ryan Anderson and C.J. Brown will be missed. All of those guys, as well as several others will be missed on our football team this season.”
Sullivan said he also would use the spring to see how much progress the younger players had made in the offseason, and to work on fundamentals.
“You also want to see how your young guys have developed over the winter,” Sullivan said. “It’s their opportunity and hopefully they can make the most of it. As always, we’ll work a lot on fundamentals in the spring as well.”
Samford will practice again Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. in shorts and helmets. The team’s first day in full pads will be Thursday, beginning at 4:15 p.m.
