MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A state lawmaker wants Alabama's public universities to have to interview at least one minority candidate for all athletic department jobs.
State Rep. John Rogers of Birmingham says he will introduce the bill this week. He doubts it will pass in the session starting Tuesday.
Rogers said the bill would require one minority candidate for every three prospects interviewed. Oregon is the only state with such a law. The one Rogers seeks would apply to all positions, not just head coaches or athletic directors, as the Oregon law does.
Rogers says he just wants minorities to have shots at the jobs.
The NFL's "Rooney Rule" requires teams to interview minorities during head coaching searches.
