BIRMINGHAM -- The UAB football team battled rainy conditions on Tuesday morning in one of the final practices before the Blazers open the season against Florida Atlantic on Thursday.
Despite the conditions, head coach Neil Callaway was pleased with the team’s performance Tuesday.
“I thought we got a lot out of today,” Callaway said. “The kids worked hard and did a nice job fighting the weather. Our guys are ready to go. Now we’ll see what we’ve got Thursday night.”
The Blazers hit the practice field one more time on Wednesday in preparation to take on the Owls. Although UAB knocked off FAU last season, 56-29, Callaway recognizes both teams have changed and Thursday’s matchup will be a challenge for the Blazers.
“Florida Atlantic’s offense is extremely explosive and will be a challenge for our defense,” Callaway said. “But I’m excited about our guys and the opportunity to watch this team play. Thursday’s game will be a fact-finding mission to see if we’ve been accurate on the assessment of our guys, but we also have to set the tone for the season.”
The Blazers and Owls kick off at 7 p.m. CT at Legion Field. The game will be carried live on the Blazers ISP Sports Network and can be heard in Birmingham on 107.7 WUHT-FM. David Crane, John Whitcomb and Otis Leverette will call the action with the pregame show beginning at 5:30 p.m.
