BIRMINGHAM — Three days away from Thursday’s season-opening football game between UAB and Florida Atlantic, Blazer head coach Neil Callaway addressed the media Monday at his first weekly press conference.
Senior defensive end Bryant Turner, senior running back Justin Brooks and junior safety Chase Daniel were also on hand to discuss the start of the 2010 campaign.
UAB and Florida Atlantic will be meeting Thursday for the third time in three seasons, having split the first two contests. The Owls won two seasons ago, 49-34, in Boca Raton, Fla., and the Blazers evened the series last year, 56-29, at Legion Field.
UAB rolled up 622 yards of total offense in the 2009 meeting, the third-highest total in program history, including 330 yards on the ground. Callaway, though, knows this is a new year.
“Our 2009 team is gone,” Callaway said, “and I want to see what kind of personality we’re going to have, what kind of leadership we’re going to have, and how our guys are going to respond to situations and adversity as it comes along during the year.”
Thursday’s kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. CT at Legion Field. The game will be carried live on the Blazers ISP Sports Network and can be heard in Birmingham on 107.7 WUHT-FM. David Crane, John Whitcomb and Otis Leverette <http://uabsports.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/leverette_otis00.html> will call the action with the pregame show beginning at 5:30 p.m.
