BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team worked out for just over two hours here Wednesday, continuing to focus on their preparations for next week’s season-opening game against Florida Atlantic.
The Blazers will kick off the 2010 season on Thursday, Sept. 2 when they play host to the Owls at Legion Field. Gametime is set for 7:00 p.m. CT.
UAB spent Wednesday morning’s session in shoulder pads and helmets and left head coach Neil Callaway generally pleased with his team’s performance.
“I thought there was good effort today, and the guys worked hard,” said Callaway “We’re still working on Florida Atlantic and trying to get familiar with what they do offensively and defensively.
“They hurt us last year with the play-action pass with the fullback and tight end in the flat. We’ve got to make sure defensively we’re aware of what’s going on. We’ve got a lot of work to do with our underneath coverage.”
Callaway said while his team is anxious to play against someone other than themselves, the Blazers still have plenty to accomplish before they tee it up next Thursday.
“We’re ready to play a game but we’ve got a lot of work to do before we get there,” he said. “We still have a week to go. We’ve only been working on FAU for three days so we’ve still got a lot of work to do for them. These next four or five days will be very important to us.”
Callaway said sophomore linebacker Greg Irvin and the defensive scout team “did a great job today. Those guys are working hard.”
