BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB football team continued preparations for its season opener against Florida Atlantic by working out for just over two hours in full pads Tuesday morning at the UAB practice fields.
Head coach Neil Callaway was pleased with Tuesday’s session. Practice began nearly an hour earlier than the normal routine due to a large number of players with mid-morning class.
“It’s tough to have the distraction of people leaving,” Callaway said. “We don’t like getting them up so early, but that’s what we have to do and it worked out well. I thought the whole practice was good. They were focused and worked hard, but we still obviously have to work on things that Florida Atlantic does. We came out here Sunday to get a jumpstart on it and I think it helped today go a lot better.”
The Blazers ran the practice like a typical Tuesday during game week with 30 minutes of competition, some 11-on-11 drills, as well as working on the play book. Overall, Callaway pointed to several areas of his team that stood out.
“The defense did a heck of a job, especially the defensive line stopping the run,” Callaway said. “David Isabelle threw the ball really well, and I thought the special teams, in particular the kickoff team, did a good job. There were a lot of good things today.”
UAB opens its 2010 slate on Thursday, Sept. 2 when the Blazers play host to Florida Atlantic. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT at Legion Field.
