BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB head coach Neil Callaway said Monday that sophomore David Isabelle will be the team’s starting quarterback when the 2010 season begins on Thursday, Sept. 2.
With the graduation of record-setting signal-caller Joe Webb after last season, the issue of who would replace Webb has been at the top of the list of questions for the Blazers as they looked to the 2010 campaign.
Isabelle and junior Bryan Ellis emerged early in fall camp as the leaders to take over the starting QB position. And on Monday, Callaway said Isabelle would be the starter though Ellis will see significant action during the season.
“David Isabelle’s going to be our starting quarterback,” Callaway told a group of media on Monday. “We’ve talked to all the quarterbacks. We feel good about what David brings to the table. The competition was very close between David and Bryan Ellis. We’re lucky to have two guys that I feel comfortable with in David and Bryan."
“We just thought overall with David’s athleticism (he was the best guy for the job). But we do plan on playing Bryan. I’m not going to say he’s going to play ‘X’ number of series or this series or that series, but I do feel confident and comfortable with him going in and winning a football game.”
Both Isabelle and Ellis saw limited action last season. Isabelle saw spot duty behind Webb and played in all 12 games, hitting 6-of-14 passes for 39 yards with one touchdown pass (to Webb). Isabelle, like Webb, possesses excellent running skills. He rushed 32 times for 288 yards (9.0 average) with one TD in 2009. Ellis connected on 1-of-4 passes for 14 yards last season, seeing action in four games.
UAB opens the 2010 season on Thursday, Sept. 2 when the Blazers play host to Florida Atlantic in a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at Legion Field.
