BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB football team practiced for just under an hour Friday morning in shoulder pads and shorts as the Blazers tapered their work in preparation for Saturday's scrimmage.
The closed scrimmage will be the Blazers' second of fall practice. To get ready, UAB spent much of Friday's session doing situational work.
"We backed off a bit getting ready for tomorrow, which will be a big day for us," UAB head coach Neil Callaway said. "We are focusing on letting everybody compete at every position. We’ll come out of it tomorrow with a pecking order."
A week removed from the team's first scrimmage, Callaway said he hopes to see an improved running game and more consistency in the passing attack.
UAB is now less than two weeks away from its Sept. 2 season opener against Florida Atlantic at Legion Field. Callaway said the team will turn its attention to the Owls following Saturday's scrimmage.
"We'll start Sunday with preparing for Florida Atlantic," he said. "We'll evaluate after tomorrow. Sunday afternoon we'll come out here to practice, and from that point on, everything will be Florida Atlantic.
The Blazers will hold their annual Fan Day this Saturday, Aug. 21 with "Breakfast with the Blazers" scheduled for 9 a.m. in Bartow Arena. Breakfast is free for all UAB football season ticket holders and UAB students; $5 for all other guests.
The annual event will begin with the pancake breakfast from 9-10 a.m. on the Bartow Arena concourse. Blazer fans will have a chance to meet the UAB football team and coaches during an autograph session from 10-11 a.m.
Following the autograph signings, several members of the Blazer team will challenge the UAB volleyball team in a volleyball exhibition on the Bartow Arena floor. The exhibition is scheduled to start at approximately 11 a.m.
Fans can reserve their place for the breakfast by calling 205-996-5218.
