BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Samford football team practiced for about two hours in full pads Tuesday afternoon at Seibert Stadium. The Bulldogs are preparing for Saturday’s home opener against the Jacksonville University Dolphins.
Samford head coach Pat Sullivan said the Bulldogs began installing their game plan for this weekend’s game during Tuesday’s practice.
“They’re still a little sore,” Sullivan said. “But, I thought today was a good practice. All Tuesday practices are for learning, installing your game plan, and a lot of times you’re not as polished as you want to be.
“But, I thought their attitude was good, especially considering the tragedy that took place on campus today,” Sullivan said. “Our sympathy and prayers go out for Jim (Griffin) and his family. A lot of our guys have heavy hearts today.”
Sullivan said he has been impressed with what he has seen from Jacksonville so far during the Bulldogs’ preparations.
“They won their conference last year,” Sullivan said. “I know they have a good quarterback (Josh McGregor) and a good running back (Rudell Small). Defensively, they have about eight starters back. They’re used to winning.”
Sullivan said the Bulldogs need to look to improve each week during the season.
“Our focus needs to be to improve from the first game to the second game,” Sullivan said. “We expended a lot of energy in that first game and we have come back and learn how to do it week after week.”
Samford will practice again Wednesday afternoon. The practice is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. at Seibert Stadium.
Saturday’s home opener against Jacksonville University is scheduled for a 6 p.m. kickoff from Seibert Stadium. The game can be heard locally on WVSU-FM 91.1, or worldwide on the internet at www.samford.edu/wvsu.
