HOOVER -- If Alabama fans think Mississippi State is destined to remain doormat material forever, they may want to think again.
Dan Mullen may be just the guy to put some bite back in the Bulldogs. If nothing else, he proved Wednesday at SEC Media Days, he's got the character, personality, charm, smarts, enthusiasm, optimism, pedigree and presentation skills to woo talent to Starkville, Miss.
Listen to him five minutes, and you know he's a solid football coach. An up-and-coming coach. A coach who's spent time -- 10 years to be exact -- with the guy many today consider to be the best coach in college football. One Urban Meyer.
Mullen joked about Twittering. He mentioned Facebook. He spoke on his specialty -- offense -- describing the spread attack he's installed at Mississippi State.
"My definition of our offense is that we're a multiple spread team," the former Florida assistant and now first-time head coach said. "We want to make defenses defend the entire field, sideline-to-sideline."
He talked about wanting to continue Mississippi State's tradition of hard-nosed defense, and why he brought in one-time Alabama defensive coordinator Carl Torbush to head the stop troops.
"He's been weathered as a coach," Mullen said of the former Franchione assistant.
Mullen talked of the importance of special teams and why he personally will coach that aspect of his team. He sounded a lot like Nick Saban in talking about playing relentlessly for 60 minutes.
