SEC Media Days '09 starts today with lightweights

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The 2009 college football season is finally here.

At least the parade of cliches regarding SEC football in the form of SEC Media Days.

The three-day event kicks off this afternoon at the Wynfrey Hotel in Hoover. Each SEC school will be represented by its head coach and two accompanying players and they will all take turns addressing the print, television, internet, and radio mediums.

Today's 'warm-up act' -- or at least it seems like a warm-up act -- includes Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State and Kentucky. The bigger dogs come out tomorrow with Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss and Florida.

Friday's finish has Auburn, South Carolina, LSU -- which would fit in better with Thursday's headliners -- and Tennessee.

Want a little preview of the event? Here's my best guess on what MIGHT be said over the next three days. Again, just a guess:

Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino: "Yes, Ryan Mallett is a very good quarterback, and yes his size makes it hard for him to be brought down."

Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson: "Yes, last year was a great year and something we can really build on for the future."

Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen: "Of course, it's going to take some time to implement the spread offense we ran at Florida here at Mississippi State."

Kentucky coach Rich Brooks: "Sure, no question, we definitely have some holes to fill."

Alabama coach Nick Saban: "Well, Julio is a very, very good player. I don't know what more ya'll want me to say about him. This is getting ridiculous."

Georgia coach Mark Richt: "You're absolutely right. We are going to miss Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno."

Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt: "Oh, buddy, now, we thrive on high expectations. This is a special group right here now, let me tell you."

Florida coach Urban Meyer: "You're asking me if Tim Tebow could go down as the greatest college quarterback of all time? What do you think?"

Auburn coach Gene Chizik: "Let me say this, we do have a plan in place to rebuild this program. I am just so excited to be here at Auburn and be a part of this Auburn family again."

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier: "I just don't see us being that good this year. Yeah, we've got a good defense, but that's about all we have. You guys know that."

LSU coach Les Miles: "Animosity toward Alabama? I don't have any animosity toward Alabama. Why would you even ask that? They're just another team in our division. My focus is on LSU and getting us back to where we're supposed to be."

Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin: "Shoot, I've been accused of running my mouth since I was in diapers. Nah, what people say about me doesn't bother me. I'm a big boy. And I'm here to make Tennessee one of the big boys again."
