Auburn didn’t add to its list of commitments Sunday, but could have a four-star defensive tackle locked up as soon as today.
Brewton’s Jamar Travis, of W.S. Neal High School, who had previously committed to Southern Miss, said he received an offer from coach Gene Chizik this weekend and would make his decision by Monday morning.
“I was excited,” Travis said. “I’ve been waiting on an offer from Auburn.”
Travis, at 6-foot-1 and 298 pounds, is rated 29th-best at his position, according to Rivals.com. He carries a 3.5 grade point average.
Travis said he would talk to his family members before coming to a decision. He said he also wanted to talk more with new Auburn defensive line coach Tracy Rocker.
“He has an impressive resume,” Travis said. “We’ll just see how it goes.”
Travis was one of about 10 recruits on campus for the second to last weekend of official on-campus visits before National Signing Day on Feb. 4.
Two of the recruits, Gordo athlete Izauea Lanier and wide receiver Travante Stallworth (Leesville, La.), both reaffirmed their commitments to the Tigers.
“It made it stronger than what it was,” Lanier said. “But I always planned on coming here. It wasn’t like shocking when they offered, because I’ve been here since my ninth grade. So it ain’t that new to me.”
Lanier said Auburn coaches plan to use him at safety.
Auburn could also land a commitment from four-star quarterback Tyrik Rollison (Sulphur Springs, Texas) as soon as today.
Rollison, who had said previously he would be choosing between Auburn and Kansas State, did not arrive on campus until Saturday because of a basketball game, so his official visit extended into this morning, according to AuburnSports.com.
Atlanta three-star linebacker Jonathan Atchison, who is committed to Alabama, will decide between the Tide and Auburn on National Signing Day, according to AuburnSports.com.
“Jonathan got (to Auburn) on Friday and got a chance to meet the new coaching staff and everything,” Atchison’s uncle, John Williams, told AuburnSports.com. “He had spent some time here in the summer and they wanted to get him over here to meet them because back when he was initially going through the process there was something about the place that he enjoyed.”
Another one of Atchison’s uncles had a different perspective.
“Jonathan decided to take a last minute trip down to Auburn. Their coaching staff had been pleading with him to just give them a chance and check out the campus,” Dexter Smith told BamaOnline.com. “It was a last minute thing and he didn’t have anything else to do so he just went with his other uncle. I think he had a good time, but I can tell you this: he isn’t going anywhere but Alabama.”
