AUBURN — As of Monday night, Tommy Tuberville is still Auburn University’s head football coach.
But AU fans hoping for a speedy resolution of the coach’s uncertain future will have to wait at least another day.
Tuberville met with AU President Jay Gogue and athletic director Jay Jacobs Monday, as scheduled. But the three men limited their conversation to general topics about the future of the football program. Tuberville’s own future wasn’t up for discussion.
“President Gogue, Tommy, and I visited today and had a great meeting,” Jacobs said in a statement released by the school. “As I’ve previously stated, Tommy’s our coach and we’re proud of his accomplishments.”
Serious talks about Tuberville’s status are expected to happen today. Tuberville and Jacobs will meet one-on-one; Jacobs is expected to offer the coach a contract extension and a raise.
Tuberville is in the third season of a seven-year, $18 million contract, which he signed after leading Auburn to an undefeated season in 2004.
He was slated to make $2.6 million this season, one of the highest salaries in the 12-team Southeastern Conference.
Jacobs and Tuberville are also expected to discuss increased salaries for some or all of Tuberville’s assistant coaches, as well as improvements to the football team’s facilities.
“Tommy and I will sit down and meet in the near future as we do at the end of every season,” Jacobs said in Monday’s statement. “We’ll discuss what we can do to make the program better and build upon the success that we’ve sustained.
“Once we’ve met, I will make a recommendation to President Gogue.”
Through a spokesperson, Gogue declined comment Monday.
Attempts to contact Tuberville for this story were unsuccessful.
