SECOND ANNUAL “WALK A MILE IN THEIR SHOES” EVENT WILL RAISE FUNDS TO PROVIDE CARE FOR STATE’S ABUSED CHILDREN
At least 400 walkers are expected to lace up their shoes and walk a mile for the scores of abused children who receive care and healing from the Children’s Hospital Intervention and Preventive Services (CHIPS) Center each year. The second annual “Walk a Mile in Their Shoes” event gets underway Saturday, May 2, 10:30 a.m. at the UAB Mini Park (corner of 8th Ave. S. and 14th St.).
Registration for the walk is $15 which includes a T-shirt and lunch following the walk. To register, visit www.chsys.org/events or call 205/939-9956.
Walkers may plan to pick up their walk packets containing T-shirts and bib numbers on Wednesday, April 29 through Friday, May 1, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the main lobby of Children’s Hospital. On the day of the race, walkers should gather at the UAB Mini Park no later than 10 a.m. The walk will end at the Crown Lot at 1600 4th Ave. S.
The CHIPS Center provides care for children and families traumatized by physical and/or sexual abuse. The CHIPS staff is a team of specially trained clinical counselors, doctors, social workers and nurses. Services are provided free and include counseling, forensic medical evaluations and support services. More than 300 children were treated at the CHIPS Center in 2008.
“Walk a Mile in Their Shoes” is sponsored by Health Care Procurement Solutions, LLC. The inaugural event drew a crowd of 380 participants and organizers expect even greater participation this year.
“People often ask me, ‘What can I do to help child abuse victims?’ This is a tangible way you can offer much needed support to help us continue providing these life-changing services free of charge,” said CHIPS Director Lou Lacey. “We know that children who have been abused can heal if they are given the right help. At the CHIPS Center we provide a comprehensive range of services for child abuse victims.”
The Children’s Hospital of Alabama is the 10th busiest pediatric medical center in the United States. Located in Birmingham, Children’s is one of only about 45 freestanding acute care hospitals of its kind in the nation and the only hospital in Alabama dedicated solely to the care and treatment of children. It is licensed for 275 beds. Children’s is a private, not-for-profit hospital governed by a volunteer board of trustees. The hospital was recently recognized for the excellence of its nursing care by achieving Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Children’s will celebrate its centennial anniversary in 2011.
