Kitchen shapes are very important to consider when designing a new kitchen.
Here are the main types:
Galley
This is a kitchen that works in a small space. It consists of two lines of countertops and cabinets.
U-shaped
Just like it sounds. This type of kitchen provides the greatest amount of counter space. However, it requires more space. When placing appliances think of the "work triangle". This allows smooth work flow in your kitchen. The 3 main areas should be separated: sink, refrigerator, range/oven. The dishwasher needs to be placed near the sink for easy cleaning and for plumbing.
Keep in mind in a u-shaped kitchen the floor area is reduced. This can make the kitchen have a cramped or give a pinned feel.
L-shaped
A very common shape. It requires less space than a U-shaped. Part of it could be a peninsula that extends out which can make a great bar for serving and eating.
Islands:
Ls-shaped and U-shaped kitchens can have an island. An island can greatly increase your work space. You can also add things like:under-counter ice maker, prep sink (small sink for prepping veggies or preparing beverages), a new trend is to put a microwave or warming drawer in the island. A gas range can look great on the island along with pendant lighting. When selecting lighting make sure you look at the billiard selection. These are light fixtures that are made for pool tables-but, they can work great in kitchens to light up an island or peninsula.
