I haven’t had good honeydew in a long time. Last week I drove to the Western on Highland to pick up a few items and noticed honeydew was on sale. I stood there debating in my head for a moment, “Will it be sweet and delicious, or disappointing.” So I picked one up. It was really heavy for its size; a good sign. I carried around that melon for five minutes before deciding to buy it.
By the time I got home I was ready for a snack, so out came the cutting board and a knife. I started dismantling the honeydew and cut a first bite. The sweetness of honey poured over my taste buds—fresh, cool and delectably juicy—exactly what honeydew should be. I ate about a dozen pieces before I spotted the rind. If the fruit was that good, how far down would the sweetness go? I picked up the slice and took a bite. More syrupy sweetness continued all the way to the peel. From then on I left nothing but the peel behind.
If you don’t like honeydew, you may never have had a nice juicy ripe one that’s in season. Or maybe you’ve only had it as cheap filler in a fruit salad as some restaurant salad bars like to do. Even though it’s available year round, honeydew is at its peak from August to October. Even better, it’s on sale at most grocery stores right now. So get out there and at least carry one around the store for a while. Chances are, you’ll decide to take it home, and you won’t be disappointed.
