You’ve probably seen the ads on TV—“Happy cows come from California.” Well, I beg to differ. Happy cows can be found right here in Alabama. Just travel to Wright Dairy on Canebrake Farm in Calhoun County. There you’ll find fresh milk, yogurt and ice cream, all made from milk that is produced, pasteurized and bottled at Wright Dairy.
They say at Wright Dairy, “the cream still rises to the top.” In fact, it does. You actually have to give their milk a little shake to mix the cream back in before you pour a tall, cool glass. The milk tastes sweeter here than from most store bought brands. That’s because the cows actually get to graze outside, get fresh air and eat green grass growing in the fields.
But you don’t have to travel all the way to Calhoun County to taste Wright Dairy’s sweet wares. They thoughtfully placed a store right on Highway 280 in Inverness. It’s located off Cahaba Beach Road near one of those hardware mega marts. The staff is always friendly and more than happy to explain their products and why they’re so great.
There you’ll find hand-dipped Wright Dairy ice cream in an assortment of flavors like Strawberried Alive, Calhoun County Cappuccino and Purple Cow. They have the standard Vanilla and Chocolate, too. You can purchase milk in a few different varieties including butter and chocolate—yum.
They also have some of the best beef you’ll find anywhere: Burt’s Beef. It comes from Teddy Gentry’s (bass player for the band “Alabama”) farm—Bent Tree Farms in Fort Payne. Gentry bought the 60 acre farm from his grandfather with his first check from RCA Records, and he’s been raising cattle ever since, and they’re happy cows, too. Gentry uses a special breed of cattle that are smaller and better adapted to the South’s hot climate. And he takes good care of them. They’re grass fed and they're also hormone and antibiotic free. Maybe that’s one reason Gentry’s cows live longer than regular cows. The steaks are tasty, too. They’re pricey, but quite tender. Sometimes you have to pay a little more to get great quality.
Quality is what you’ll get from Wright Dairy. The farmers have a deep respect for the food they produce and provide to people they don’t even know—it makes you feel like family. Just thinking about it makes me feel happy, too.
