New chefs, new food and new plates. It’s an exciting time when the Birmingham area gets to welcome a new restaurant. We’ve welcomed many great restaurants in the past few years including The Veranda, Gianmarco’s and Urban Standard. While it’s impossible to know whether a restaurant will be considered “great” before it opens, I think it’s worth knowing when a new eatery is coming to your town.
Next up, Another Broken Egg Café. It’s a smallish chain run as a franchise. People around the newsroom who travel to Sandestin, Florida regularly, where two of the cafes are located, say it’s a knockout. Miller Phillips, who comes from a family of restaurateurs, plans to open as many as four of these breakfast/brunch/lunch cafes throughout Birmingham. He hopes to place the first one in Mountain Brook Village, but there’s no opening date set yet.
According to the website, Another Broken Egg Café cracks open more than 1,400 eggs a week at each location. A quick scan of the menu shows some really delicious sounding breakfast fare.
Omelettes like “The Floridian” consist of sautéed fresh crabmeat, butter, garlic, green onions and jack and cream cheese. I plan to order “Stan’s #1.” It’s an omelette with crawfish, shrimp, mushrooms, ham, Cajun seasoning and melted jack and cheddar cheese.
Besides omelettes, there are classics like Eggs Benedict, Baked Brie, Huevos Rancheros and Homemade Quiche. But the thing everyone who has been there before is talking about is the Banana’s Foster. It’s your choice of a Belgian waffle, French toast or a large pancake. The soft, doughy item is covered with warm Banana’s Foster sauce and whipped cream, then sprinkled with pecans and fresh banana slices. Now that sounds crazy good.
There are also lots of lunch options like sandwiches, soups, burgers, salads, and pie but it sounds to me like the morning time fare is the restaurant’s specialty. Another Broken Egg Café is usually open from 7am-2pm. Phillips says if it does well, he may keep it open later. The restaurants at the beach have won the “Best of the Emerald Coast” award multiple times. Of course I’ll be visiting for breakfast and lunch to test it out when it opens, and I’ll let you know.
My hope is that this blog will be the place to hear about new restaurants coming to our area before they open. If you are opening a restaurant of any type in the Birmingham area, or have heard rumors about an opening, I would love to do the research and then announce it.
