They’re like a superhero and his surfer dude sidekick, coming to the rescue of busy moms, singles who hate to cook and me when Alabama's allergy season kicks in. I’m talking about the juggernaut that is Taziki’s and his next-door neighbor, Baha Burger. Both restaurants are located at the Colonnade on Highway 280 and both are owned by Keith Richards. Taziki’s has three more locations: Liberty Park Plaza, Mountain Brook Plaza and The Village at Lee Branch.
First Taziki’s: You may have heard of the Friday Special. ($7.25) It is grilled chicken tossed with homemade balsamic vinaigrette atop mixed lettuces with tomatoes, feta cheese and basil. Apparently they serve about 500 portions of the stuff every Friday. Don’t get me wrong, it’s delicious. But it’s not my favorite thing on the menu.
Also a great choice is the Lamb Salad. ($6.75) The lamb is tender and flavorful and it comes served atop Taziki’s signature salad with the Greek dressing on the side. I love that it comes with a spicy salad pepper and whole olives. The dressing deserves an extra mention. It’s tangy with big chunks of feta cheese. The dish is almost my favorite, but not quite.
My absolute favorite dish on the menu is the Greek Lemon Chicken Soup with Basmati Rice. ($2.25 cup, $3.00 bowl, $8.50 quart) There is something miraculous about this soup. It has healing powers! I know, this sounds ridiculous, but anytime I’m feeling under the weather I swing by and pick up a quart of this healing elixir. It has shredded chicken, a tart lemony broth, julienne carrots and whole peppercorns! It will open up your nose, heal your throat and make your insides feel all warm and cozy. They also send you home with a handful of pita wedges to dip in the broth. When I’m sick and can’t taste anything, I can still taste this. Then I crawl into bed early and the next day I feel so much better. I highly recommend this soup. That’s why Taziki’s is my superhero.
