One of the questions I get asked the most is, "Do I like my job?"
My answer is "I love my job - 99.9% of the time!"
I went into this business because you get to learn new things and meet all sorts of different people everyday.
Some days are hard: when you're covering a tragedy or a heinous crime.
Then there are fun assignments that make you wonder how you're managing to get paid for having such a good time. Assignments like profiling the athletes going to the Olympics and Paralympics. These people are so inspiring - the only downside is it makes me wonder what excuse I have for being so lazy so often!
Along with these profiles for our Ozone shows, I'm also doing stories with local Olympic angles. Like this past Saturday when I found myself at Elite Gymnastics in Hoover. I met a handful of young gymnasts - ---ages 7-14---- that USA Gymnastics is keeping a close eye on because they're showing so much potential.
No wonder! These girls ---again as young as 7----- get up around five a.m. everyday, get to the gym by six, workout for two hours, then head to regular school or home school. They're back in the gym in the afternoon for another three hour workout. It seems strange to describe a 7-year-old as an athlete, but these girls are truly amazing.
I am floored at their discipline and commitment! Oh, and they're such enjoyable, personable girls as well. My photographer Joel Tidwell and I were at Elite for hours Saturday for our Olympic kick-off coverage. These girls were well spoken, friendly and very close to each other, almost like sisters. I suppose they probably see each other more than they see their biological siblings.
I hope in 2012 or 2016 I sit down to watch the gymnastics events --- my favorite, by the way --- and see one or two of these athletes. They're certainly putting in the time and effort!
