Fairfield, AL (WVTM) --- Miles College is hoping to increase it’s campus but the college isn’t just focusing on *physical* changes. By 2012 Miles College could be Miles University.
Miles Chief of Staff, Kenneth Coachman said, "We feel like we're positioned at the right time and at the right place, right now to make these kinds of proposals."
That's the vision of College President Dr. George French. His proposals - add two masters degree programs in social work and education.
Coachman said, "We feel that and we know that many of our students go on to get master's degrees from other universities, we say, why not Miles."
French's vision began several years ago, just before the college purchased the old Lloyd Nolan Hospital, now called the North Campus.
Miles College would also like to purchase the Newton Gardens projects. Buying this property would connect the main campus to the Nolan Hospital property. Connecting all three properties would provide space to add, a health and wellness center, dorms, an entertainment center and more.
Coachman said, "The college's future is beyond our imagination at this point. Our president is so far ahead of us, that we have to run to keep up with him. So we're looking forward to a bright future."
The ultimate vision is following in the footsteps of UAB and what it has done for Birmingham, doing the same here in Fairfield.
Miles College currently has a task force looking into adding the two master degree programs and hopes to petition the "Southern Association of College and Schools" or "SACS" for university status next year.
Miles was founded back in 1898 by the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. It was chartered by the state in 1905 as Miles Memorial College.
The college is still supported by and affiliated with the CME church.
