ANNISTON, Ala. (AP) - A lawyer and accountant for an Anniston judge say tax claims against him have been overstated by a collection company.
Calhoun County probate records show Circuit Court Judge Joel Laird and his business, the Courthouse Cafe, face multiple tax liens dating back several years.
The records show delinquent payment of more than $37,000 in taxes, most of it owed to the Alabama Department of Revenue and the city of Anniston.
Laird's attorney, Bruce Adams and accountant, Mike Askew, said Thursday that most of those taxes are sales taxes - including interest and delinquency fees - that private tax-collecting firm Revenue Discovery Systems improperly placed on the cafe.
They say some of the claims involve taxes levied for a time period when the business was closed.
