BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Birmingham is paying $90,000 for dozens of neighborhood volunteers to attend a national conference, despite the city's budget problems.
The 124 representatives from some of Birmingham's 99 neighborhood associations will attend the Neighborhood USA Conference May 26-29 in Little Rock, Arkansas.
The annual event offers a variety of workshop to teach volunteers how to improve their community.
Highland Park Neighborhood President Allison Glascock has attended five of the conferences over the years.
She claims the experience is invaluable to a fresh neighborhood officer because it offer new ideas how to spruce up the city.
However, with Birmingham facing a potential budget shortfall in excess of $50 million, Glascock feels neighborhood officers could have made some sacrifices.
The said that in light of the city's budget condition, the city should not be paying for up to two representatives from each neighborhood to attend.
This year's delegation is the largest from Birmingham in at least five years.
The group is cutting costs by taking the seven hour trip by bus.
