ANNISTON, Ala. (AP) - A Calhoun County judge owes thousands of dollars in delinquent state and city taxes, and records show he faces multiple liens to ensure the debts are paid.

The Anniston Star reports that probate court records show Circuit Court Judge Joel Laird and his business, the Courthouse Cafe in Anniston, have been hit with 14 tax liens since 2004 over delinquent payment of about $40,000 in taxes.

Laird told the newspaper he thinks most of the liens have been resolved.

The newspaper says records indicate five of the liens have been released due to payment of the debts.

The taxes were collected on the condition they would be paid to the state and the city of Anniston.

The city has a lien on Laird's business for $16,086.57 in unpaid taxes.
