Alabama leaders predict 12 percent budget cut

The governor says he won't make a decision about across-the-board cuts until March 23rd.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Legislative leaders expect the governor
will soon order across-the-board cuts in the state operating budget
of about 12 percent.
House Speaker Seth Hammett and House budget committee Chairman
John Knight made that prediction after discussing the state General
Fund budget with Gov. Bob Riley. Senate budget committee Chairman
Roger Bedford says he expects a double-digit cut, but it's too
early to say how much.
The governor says he won't make a decision about
across-the-board cuts, or proration, until after the Legislature
returns from its spring break March 23.
