MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A summary of action in the Alabama
Legislature on Wednesday, a committee meeting day:
HOUSE
-Republican state Rep. Warren Beck of Geneva was found dead in
his Montgomery hotel room. Police said he appeared to have had a
heart attack.
COMMITTEES
-House Education Appropriations Committee added a cap on college
tuition to a Senate-passed bill that would provide $236 million to
shore up Alabama's prepaid college tuition plan. Goes to House.
-House Education Appropriations Committee discussed, but did not
vote on a bill that would change the way the Legislature prepares
the education budget.
-House Government Appropriations Committee discussed, but did
not vote on a bill to require the Alabama Department of Mental
Health to get permission from the Legislature before privatizing
services for mental health patients.
-Senate Economic Expansion and Trade Committee held a public
hearing on several ethics bills, including one to give the State
Ethics Commission subpoena power, but did not vote.
AGENDA
-House and Senate meet at 10 a.m. Thursday.
