MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Gov. Bob Riley's plan to legalize
charter schools in Alabama is facing a make-or-break vote in a
state Senate committee.
The Senate Finance and Taxation-Education Committee is scheduled
to vote Wednesday on Riley's legislation to allow charter schools.
Committee Chairman Hank Sanders of Selma says the bill faces a lot
of opposition.
The House Education Appropriations Committee killed a similar
charter school bill last Wednesday. A Senate committee vote against
the proposal would mean both houses of the Legislature have stopped
Riley's legislation.
Charter schools are public schools that don't have to follow the
same rules as other schools, such as the teacher tenure law.
