MADISON, Ala. (AP) - A ninth-grader is in extremely critical condition after being shot by another student at an Alabama middle school.

Officials said 14-year-old Todd Brown was taken by ambulance to Huntsville Hospital from Discovery Middle School, where the shooting occurred Friday afternoon.

The accused shooter, also a ninth-grader, was arrested inside in the school.

School officials said no one else was injured and it wasn't immediately clear what prompted the gunfire. City superintendent Dee Fowler said it was a "singular incident" and that a hot line was being set up for students and staff to talk to counselors.

Madison has about 38,500 residents, many of whom work in technology jobs related to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center at Redstone Arsenal.
