Southern governors push for drilling revenue

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) - Alabama's and Mississippi's governors are telling federal officials the Gulf coast states deserve more from oil wells drilled in the Gulf because the states are assuming great risks.

Alabama Gov. Bob Riley and Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour made the point Monday during the Southern Governors' Association convention in Hoover. They got no commitment from two officials of the Obama administration: senior adviser Valerie Jarrett and assistant secretary of Interior Wilma Lewis. But Lewis told them that the administration and Congress are hearing their voices.

North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue told the administration officials that her state will oppose drilling off its coast unless it gets a share of the revenue and is convinced the drilling will be safe.
