TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Two former University Alabama students have sued the school, saying its mandatory food fee violates state law.
The Tuscaloosa News reports that David Vandenberg and Elizabeth Beene request a refund of the money they paid for Dining Dollars. They also ask for the case to become a class-action suit open to all UA students who have paid the fee.
Similar suits have been filed against UA, University of Alabama at Birmingham and Auburn University, along with the private companies that manage each campus' dining.
At UA, undergraduates taking more than nine credit hours have pay a fee for credit they can use in on-campus dining halls, some vending machines and three off-campus restaurants.
Danny Evans, a lawyer representing the former students, says the program deprives students of their freedom of choice. The university declined to comment on pending litigation.
