HUEYTOWN, Ala. (AP) - The Hueytown City Council has unanimously
approved a weed abatement ordinance.
The plan approved Tuesday night allows the city to mow overgrown
lawns and collect payment when taxes are due each year.
Council president Ray Roberson said the ordinance is targeted at
foreclosed properties, which often change hands and finding the
owners or banks responsible for them can be difficult.
The ordinance allows the city to recoup the cost of cutting
through property tax liens.
Owners will be notified prior to a public hearing and given the
opportunity to mow yards where the grass has grown more than 12
inches high.
The panel also approved the city paying an estimated $45,000 a
year to cover an increase in health insurance cost for active
full-time employees.
