BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Birmingham is getting the area's first dog park after the Mayor Larry Langford ended years of red tape delays.

The park will be located inside George Ward Park off Green Springs Highway near downtown Birmingham.

The organization, Bark for a Park, had been raising money for the park for years, but could not get the green light from the Parks Board to start construction.

Wednesday, Mayor Langford called the Public Works Department and ordered them to start installing the park's fence.

Bark for a Park will reimburse the city for supplies up to $30,000.

The venue will offer three separate fenced-in areas for dogs of different sizes to roam leash-free.

Construction of the park is expected to finish by next Monday, Tuesday at the latest.
