Hoover, Ala.---Every year, Black Friday remains one of the busiest shopping days in the U.S. That appeared to be the case once again this year, as bargain hunters waited in long lines in the cold for some of the hottest ticket items this year. Despite the recession, shoppers shelled out cash and credit for Christmas gifts.
We begin this Black Friday shopping experience at toys r us. It opened at midnight. For many of these folks, this is a tradition.
Black Friday Shoppers, Samantha Gallups & Angel Green said, "We're carrying out the tradition. Carrying on the tradition. Our moms used to go when we were little and now we're going for our children and eventually we'll take our children."
Black Friday Shopper, Jean Forbis said, "We've got several other places to go, we're just out having a good time, its become a tradition and we enjoy it."
It's organized chaos here at best buy with people waiting in line since two o'clock yesterday afternoon for bargains on tvs, appliances and laptops. Seventy-five employees are here at Best Buy with a sales goal of 800 thousand today. Last year, this store made 711 thousand on Black Friday.
Best Buy Customer Solutions Manager, Tyler Reinmiller said, "This is my 9th one, just every year, you want to make sure every things in place, people in place, make sure that every body's ready mentally, get your people ready for it so."
Well certainly these shoppers are ready mentally. All either siblings or cousins, these UAB students started in line yesterday afternoon for laptops. Could it be a new tradition for them?
Black Friday Shopper Imad Nawaz said, "It was definitely worth the wait but its the first time I ever did it but, you can tell by my voice, I'm starting to get the cold, my voice is gone, it's not worth it, so it kind of evens out so..."
Whether it's a tradition or not for the Nawaz family they walked out the door with 400 dollar laptops.
Black Friday started out as a derogatory term for the traffic jams shoppers caused the day after Christmas in the 1960's. In the last ten years or so, it's meant more of a day when stores offer deep discounts and turn a profit.
