BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---
Roderick Royal was picked as Birmingham's City Council President Tuesday, and as a result interim Mayor.
Royal lobbied for Council President, but hopes he does not have to serve as interim Mayor any longer than he must.
Since former Mayor Larry Langford's fraud conviction on October 28th, Carole Smitherman has served as interim mayor after the conviction vacated the mayor's office.
That interim term expired with the swearing-in of the newly elected City Council Tuesday.
Smitherman wanted to maintain her position as Council President, and interim Mayor by default, to provide Birmingham with stability until next month's mayoral election.
However, Tuesday the new City Council voted 5-4 in favor of Royal.
He will serve as interim Mayor until one is elected.
That will happen on December 8 or January 19 if a runoff election is forced.
Also, the Council voted 5-4 to pick Steven Hoyt as Council President Pro-tem, which runs the council meetings when the Council President is away.
