Birmingham City Council members sworn in; new interm mayor elected

All nine members of the Birmingham City Council were sworn in today.

All nine members of the Birmingham City Council were sworn in today.

NBC13HD News Digital Journalist Jon Paepcke reports that it took about 40 minutes to wear in all nine members at City Hall.

The current council now consists of:

Valerie Abbott, Johnathan Austin, Steven Hoyt, Maxine Parker, Kim Rafferty, Jay Roberson, Roderick Royal, Lashunda Scales, and Carole Smitherman.

The council just voted in Roderick Royal as council president, which in turn means Royal is now the interim mayor, until the special election for Birmingham Mayor December 8, 2009.
