VIDEO: Bessemer mayor threatens to shut down new bingo halls

BESSEMER, Ala. --- Bessemer Mayor Ed May warned potential bingo halls to stay away from his city.

May argued that because of two of his vetoes, there is not an ordinance authorizing electronic bingo in Bessemer.

He threatened to raid any new bingo halls and confiscate their machines if the police department determined they were breaking the law.

A few bingo halls, like the Anchor Club, are currently allowed to stay open in Bessemer because of a pending lawsuit.

The Anchor Club General Manager Robert White feels there is an existing ordinance giving his business the green light to operate in Bessemer.

However, he suggests the city council should sue the mayor to get a judge to help decide the matter once and for all.
