MONTEVALLO, Ala. (AP) - The embattled president of the University of Montevallo will resign next year.

Officials at the liberal arts college announced Philip Williams' departure on Tuesday. He went on sabbatical in September following disagreements with trustees.

A school statement said Williams will resume his duties as president on Jan. 4. But he will resign as president effective July 31.

University spokeswoman Cynthia Shackelford referred questions about any financial agreement between the school and Williams to the vice president for business affairs, DeAnna Smith. She didn't immediately return a telephone call.

Williams and the board were at odds partly over whether he was making policy decisions without board approval.

Trustees hope to have a new president in place by Aug. 1.
