RUSSELLVILLE, Ala. (AP) - The Franklin County Commission has
approved a 1 percent sales tax increase to help schools cope with
their second year of state budget cuts.
The commission in the northwest Alabama county voted 3-1 Monday.
The increase goes into effect Jan. 1 and adds an additonal penny
in tax to each dollar spent. It will last for two years unless
voted down by a countywide referendum in June.
The commission said 58 percent of the tax revenue will go to
county schools and 42 percent to city schools.
