GULF SHORES, Ala. (AP) - Part of the Gulf State Park Pier has
reopened and a park official says the rest should be open soon.
The Press-Register reports that a section of the pier reopened
Friday morning after it was damaged by Tropical Storm Ida on Monday
night into Tuesday morning.
Assistant Park Superintendent Trey Myers says the rest of the
1,540-foot pier, which stands 20 feet above the water should be
ready for fishing by Thanksgiving weekend.
Myers says a state engineer inspected the parts of the pilings
above the waterline Thursday and found no damage. Myers says
there's no sign that the pilings shifted during their battering by
waves.
The current pier replaced a shorter version destroyed by
Hurricane Ivan in 2004.
