BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---
Former Jefferson County Commissioner Mary Buckelew asked for leniency at her federal sentencing Thursday.
She is set to be punished for lying to a federal grand jury in August 2008.
"I made a mistake - do not condone for myself. I can never restore that Iso foolishly gave away," Buckelew said to Judge Inge Johnson.
Prosecutor George Martin responded, "It was not a mistake, it was intentional criminal conduct. She made a conscious decision to do wrong."
Buckelew has pleaded guilty to lying to the grand jury about receiving about $4,000 in gifts from investment banker Bill Blount between 2003-2004.
Blount received millions of dollars in county bond swap business while Buckelew served on the Jefferson County Commission.
Blount has pleaded guilty to a bribery conspiracy involving former Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford who was convicted himself 3 weeks ago.
