BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Acting Birmingham Mayor Carole Smitherman has fired Deborah Vance-Bowie as mayoral chief of staff over the handling of the city's $20 million budget shortfall.
Kevin Moore has been named interim mayoral chief of staff.
Smitherman at a news conference today said that former City Finance Director Steve Sayler said he told Vance-Bowie the city's budget was in trouble in June, not three weeks ago like Vance-Bowie has claimed.
Smitherman also said that department heads claim former Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford knew about the budget shortfall.
