Smitherman: City under funded essential services by $20 million

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---
Acting Mayor Carole Smitherman told Birmingham City Council Tuesday that the current budget under funded essential services by $20 million.

Smitherman offered few other details but added that the city has $160 million in reserve to cover the shortage.

Monday former finance chief Steve Sayler resigned after turning in a report to Smitherman about the city's financial status.

Smitherman took over as acting Mayor Last Wednesday following the fraud conviction of former Mayor Larry Langford.
