Damage In Alabama Widespread From Sunday Storms

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The fast-moving storms that barreled across central and north-central Alabama this afternoon apparently didn't injure anyone, but left behind damage over a widespread area. Despite numerous reports of tornados, funnel clouds and wall clouds, the damage doesn't appear to be too severe, so far.

Most of the damage appears to be trees and power lines knocked down. Alabama Power reports about 5,400 hundred customers without power in Jefferson and Shelby Counties; about 6,900 in the counties east of Jefferson, about 10,000 in Tuscaloosa and nearby counties. The largest number of customers without power is across the area from Opelika-Auburn, all the way to Selma and the surrounding area. There are about 10,000 customers without power in that area.

There are also some reports of damage to structures. Early reports say a baseball field in Jemison was damaged. There are also reports of damage at a festival in Hoover.
