The City of Tuscaloosa Environmental Services Department and Nucor Steel Tuscaloosa, Inc. are
sponsoring a Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Day on Saturday, June 20, 2009 from
8:00am until 12:00pm at the City of Tuscaloosa’s Environmental Services Building located on
3440 Kauloosa Avenue. Only Household Hazardous Waste will be accepted and then properly
recycled or disposed of to protect the environment. Items from City of Tuscaloosa households,
as well as, those from surrounding areas will be accepted.
“We are proud that Mayor Maddox and the Tuscaloosa City Council have allowed us to make
this an annual event. Last year’s Household Hazardous Waste Day diverted over 25,000 pounds
of hazardous waste from our local landfills. This event is just another example of the great
strides Tuscaloosa is taking to become a Cool City by helping to reduce our overall impact on
the environment”, stated Shane Daugherty, Director of Tuscaloosa’s Environmental Services
Department. “Practically every household has hazardous materials and this will allow for a
responsible and safe disposal of these materials to help protect our environment” stated Eric
Larmore, Environmental Manager for Nucor Steel. Residents are encouraged to look through
their houses and bring items that need careful and proper disposal. Examples of these
hazardous materials include:
