Birmingham, AL – During these times of economic challenges, The Women’s Fund along with its corporate partners Regions Financial Corporation and BBVA Compass, are awarding grants totaling $65,000 that will reach approximately 600 women and girls in the Greater Birmingham Area through financial literacy classes. Quality curriculum design and extensive one-to-one follow-up or coaching are the hallmarks of the successful proposals.
"The Women’s Fund’s overarching goal is to help women move out of poverty so that they and their children can reach their full potential. Children who are raised in poverty are less likely to finish high school and more likely to continue the cycle of poverty. Learning money management skills is a step toward earning enough money to be self-sufficient.” said Virginia Sweet, Executive Director of The Women’s Fund.
Regions Financial Corporation underwrote the award to the Birmingham Homeownership Center, which will provide 40 first-time homebuyers with one-on-one counseling and financial classes. Chief Financial Officer Irene Esteves says that, “Regions is honored to support The Women’s Fund’s work in helping more women attain the American Dream of homeownership.”
BBVA Compass chose to support Girls Inc. through The Women’s Fund’s financial literacy grants. After joining members of The Women’s Fund for a site visit and interview, Joanne Burleson, EVP and Director of Strategy and Support for BBVA Compass, recommended Girls Inc. for BBVA Compass’ partnership. Girls Inc. offers age appropriate programs called, She’s On The Money; Dollars, Sense and Me; Equal Earners, Savvy Spenders; and Futures and Options.
