PELHAM, Ala-- Modern technology will soon be making people safer in Shelby County.
The Shelby county 911 center is installing a next generation 911 program.
Within a year, not only will operators be able to receive phone calls, but also data like pictures, videos and text messages.
Officials say it will help people who are speech or hearing impaired, and will also allow the public to help gather clues when crimes happen.
911 operators could then send pictures or videos to officers in the field to help them track down culprits.
“They say a picture's worth a thousand words and that's true,” Shelby County 911 Executive Director John Ellison said. “You and I might perceive a color differently, but if we see a photo, then we're all together. We know what we're looking for.”
The new 911 system has been purchased.
It should be operational by September.
Advance features like text messaging and pictures will come on line within a year.
