DOTHAN - Attorney General Troy King said confusing legal language has helped muddy the debate on electronic bingo in Alabama and said the best way to resolve the issue is to put it to a statewide vote.
King appeared in Dothan today and said he would make the proposal part of his legislative package he intends to push for the upcoming legislative session that begins next month.
King also said his previous written opinions on electronic bingo at Country Crossing speak for themselves.
"Personally, I am opposed to gambling. I have voted against it when I've had the opportunity to do so," King said. "But as Attorney General, I have given up the right to enforce my will. I have to enforce the laws as they are written. My opinion is that the Houston County Commission (in awarding a special bingo permit) exercised the legal authority given to them by the Constitution of this state."
King went on to say that he holds the final authority over a gambling task force appointed by Gov Bob Riley last week.
"I retain the ability to superintend or take away any case brought in this state," King said.
