Alabama lawmakers react to Obama's speech

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Here is what some of Alabama’s congressional delegation had to say about President Barack Obama’s address Tuesday night:

Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala.

Sessions said the speech was positive and focused on issues the country needs to fix.

On Obama’s healthcare plans: “The current system is not working. We need major reform. But it’s important we don’t make a crucial error and expect the government to run healthcare.”

On cutting the deficit: “He’s talking about financial responsibility, but in the short-run he’s not doing that. … It’s going to be hard to offset this stimulus bill.”

Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Birmingham

On the economic crisis: “We do need policies that will create jobs and help families struggling to make ends meet in these times of economic uncertainty. However, more government spending and borrowing isn’t the answer.”

Rep. Jo Bonner, R-Mobile

On Obama’s housing proposal: “We have to be very careful about asking people who are hard-working, tax-paying Americans who are doing it the right way to absorb even more responsibility to help people get out of a situation that perhaps they shouldn’t have been in to begin with.”

Rep. Bobby Bright, D-Montgomery

On the deficit: “I’m impressed by his desire to reduce our deficit. To do that is aggressive, but that’s music to the ears of people like me.”

On Obama’s leadership: “This man is very capable of leading us out of the economic chaos we’re in now, if given a chance.” But, Bright added, he has no qualms about voting against the president if he disagrees with Obama’s plans.

Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Anniston

On bipartisanship: "The current state of our economy doesn't leave Congress time to play politics and I look forward to continue working with the President to find common ground on the issues that matter to folks across east Alabama, like jobs, our housing crisis and energy independence.”
