BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A new batch of economic reports includes more downbeat news for the economy.
The government reports 626,000 laid-off workers filed new jobless claims last week.
In December, orders to U.S. factories fell for a record fifth straight month.
The number of people on the unemployment compensation rolls increased slightly to nearly 4.8 million. That’s the most since records began in 1967, though the work force is now much larger.
What we're experiencing is eerily reminiscent of the Great Depression of the 30's.
In his Fact Finder report, NBC13 HD's Rod Carter talked with Mavis Little and Joe Ellis, who know all too well, what a depression is like. They lived through the Great Depression nearly 80 years ago.
