BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - There was a time when U.S. 280 provided an easy trip for the few commuters who lived in rural areas south of Birmingham or a scenic route to Auburn or Columbus, Ga.

But as Alabama's largest city has grown to the south, that once quiet commute has become a congested nightmare and bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Gov. Bob Riley plans to meet at 10 a.m. Monday with legislators from Jefferson and Shelby counties to discuss plans to ease traffic congestion along the busy highway. The meeting will take place at the Alabama Department of Transportation's office on Bankhead Highway in Birmingham.
